NORINCO SKS
A few years ago I was a forward air observer for the USAF. I trained extensively with the M-16 A2 and M-4. I was severely dissatisfied with both weapons. On almost every occasion where I had to fire my weapon there was some sort of malfunction. There was one particular incident in which I had a gas feed problem that turned into an absolute horror show. I fired the first round fine and found after my second squeeze of the trigger I got nothing. I applied SPORTS and was able to fire another round. I quickly figured out that I wasn't getting a round in the chamber unless I fed it through manually. So every time I wanted to squeeze off a round I needed to yank back the charging handle and tap another round in. Never Again, I won't go anywhere near one EVER!!!
So I have been looking everywhere for an SKS. I am fairly particular about picking up a Russian or Chinese one. I tried at the local Gander Mountain where the guy threw his hands up in the air and said, "We don't have those, they are extremely dangerous. You need a class III FFL for that." Several other gunshops told me the exact same thing. Almost every time they tried to push the AR-15 onto me. Finally today I got a hold of a guy who has 3 Norinco SKS rifles "left." He didn't say "in stock" he said "left." I told him I was going to run over and pick up my purchase permit and I would be in tomorrow. All 3 of them are between $150-$300. The $300 weapon had a collapsible stock and he felt more comfortable having me get the purchase permit even though he said it usually isn't needed. He would feel safer if I got it first though. After filling out the purchase permit the receptionist at the police desk told me it could be up to 3 weeks to get my permit!!!! Great now I have to sit on pins and needles hoping these things stay in stock. What do you guys think about $150 for a wood finished Norinco SKS.... sounds like a steal at this point. |
Re: NORINCO SKS
good choice, chrome bore. stock was always a bit short for my liking, easy to put a recoil pad on to lenghten tho. clean cosmoline out thoroughly, stock up on some stripper clips and ammmo. good lightweight weapons.

Take a copy of your paperwork down to the dealer and see if you can put it on lay away  you never know

Re: NORINCO SKS
Many of the last Norinco SKSs brought into this country had barrels that were pinned into the receiver (cheaper) instead of threaded with either a long or short barrel nut.
The threaded, long barrel-nut receivers are the most desireable, IMO, because they maximize barrel rigidity and therefore improve accuracy. Also look for an arsenal "26" proofmark inside a triangle on the receiver, as these were some of the best of the Chinese imports... I also recommend the Yugoslavian SKS. They are very solidly built. No chrome-lined barrel, but that is not any problem if you are willing to clean them once in a while. Good luck, SC |

Re: NORINCO SKS
The last Norinco SKS I bought was about $190 and that was a few years ago. I was at a local Big sporting goods store yesterday. They had Yugo SKS's for $399!!!! :confused_ma:
<$200 for a SKS, get it! |
Re: NORINCO SKS
I have a Chinese Norinco SKS Factory 26 that I've dated to 1966 by the SN. I took it out last week for the first time and I absolutely love it. Some complain about the shorter stock but it works great for us shorter people. :s1:
The price on yours sounds great. I would grab it as soon as you can. And stock up on the ammo while you're at it. |
Re: NORINCO SKS
I love my Norinco SKS. I find myself shooting it far more often than my AR. 190 is a steal in this day and age!

"tatcicool" SKS's just scream white trash imo. For under 200 if the numbers match and its in decent condition thats a steal.

Re: NORINCO SKS
Yep go get it now before someone else does.

Hey, if a mod makes a rifle 'lighter' or more useful or enables one to add 'needed' accessories then I view it as 'upgrades'. If you're into it for looks ~ then your white trash comment is appropriate although I prefer 'Mall Ninja'. :bear_tongue: |

Re: NORINCO SKS
what state are you in that you need paper work before you get a gun ?

Minnesota.:36_1_63: I don't think it's normal to get a permit before a rifle purchase. I think this guy might just be a little paranoid about covering himself. |
Re: NORINCO SKS
I can't stand mine Norinco SKS rifle.
I have never traded it or sold it though. Local gun dealer I do believe told me it was a good one and he wanted it. |

Good choice BTW. I have a Norinco and I like it. I prefer it to AK and AR. Rugged machine. It came with a collapsible stock but I am replacing it with this. Should be in next week. http://www.rifletech.com/m4sks/m4sks-unit3.jpg http://www.rifletech.com/m4sks/m4sks-unit3s.jpg http://www.rifletech.com/m4sks/m4_sks_rings.jpg http://www.rifletech.com/m4sks/m4_sks_mag.jpg It will end up looking something like this... without the muzzle brake. http://www.rifletech.com/m4sks/m4_sks_bipod.jpg |

Re: NORINCO SKS
Having owned and shot many ARs, AKs and SKS, I much prefer the AK as compared to the SKS for several reasons... Just preronal pref, not trying to start a SKS bashing thread at all..
However, with rifles like these getting harder and harder to come by and the prices going though the roof, I would not mind picking up an two or three SKSs 150 ea... Makes me miss the days when I could get them at the gun shows packed in cosmoline for like 70 bucks... |
Re: NORINCO SKS
I'll bet the cheaper ones have pinned barrels, or perhaps all of them do. The prices are spectacular. Look at the barrel lug. Is it long, short, or non-existant. The long lug is the best, and represents the oldest. Also, look at the serial number. 6-digits, and it is the oldest (1956). If it is seven digits add the first digit to the year 1956 to get the year of manufacture. The older ones are built better than the newer. If any of them have 16" barrels instead of 20", by ALL means pick them up. They are Norinco Paratroopers and are quite collectible.

Re: NORINCO SKS
Started out as a semi-auto 4 shot WWII 40 pound anti-tank rifle fireing a round with about 40% more "gusto" than a 50 caliber Browning. Might be why the still overbuilt scaled down versions of the Simonoff design have a following.
